Cannon Leo Glancy, parish priest of Sacred Heart and Christ the King Church, Grangemouth, with members of the crew after celebrating Mass onboard a coal ship in the port of Leith. Also present were port chaplain Tim Bell of our ecumenical partners Sailors' Society and local volunteers.
Richard Haggarty, AOS chaplain to the ports on the Firth of Forth, said
"This was the first time that Cannon Leo had said Mass onboard a ship and he expressed his joy at being able to do so. He was warmly welcomed by captain and crew and invited back to say Mass when next possible. Tim Bell and I have a very good working relationship and I know that Catholic crews are well looked after by him."
Richard Haggerty, AOS port chaplain on the Firth of Forth, was visiting ships throughout the Christmas period. When the captain of a coal ship which regularly visits Leith requested Mass onboard, Richard arranged for Fr John McFadden to celebrate.
Fr John is the parish priest of the Church of Mary Star of the Sea. Historically, priests of the parish worked in port ministry and Fr John is happy to revive the connection.
