Chennai, seafarers' counselling centre

On 2 July 2007, a new counselling centre was inaugurated at the Chennai Seafarers’ Club

AOS port chaplain in Chennai and Ennore, Fr B Anthony was present to offer prayers and blessings for the new centre. He was joined by Br J Xavier, regional president of the Legion of Mary. The inaugural address was given by Mr Kachhap, Shipping Master and Seamen’s Welfare Officer.

Mr Kachhap spoke of the need for such a centre. He said that counsellors would have to deal with the physical, mental and spiritual challenges faced by seafarers. Seafarers live in a challenging world. When they feel homesick or receive bad news, or no news at all, or when misunderstandings arise onboard, seafarers feel the need to talk to someone who will understand their problems and offer guidance. Most visiting seafarers feel this need as soon as they arrive in port. Experienced naval officers would also be available at the centre to advise counsellors on maritime rules and regulations.

Counselling sessions are currently available for two hours a day, five days a week. It is hoped that, in time, this can be increased to eight hours a day. The services are available to all seafarers and their families and also port workers and fishers. Eleven counsellors have already dedicated their services voluntarily.
