Those who participate in competitive and recreational sailing are also People of the Sea. An event such as the Americas Cup affects hundreds of people, sailors, their families, support teams and accredited journalists among them, who may be away from home for months at a time. Marinas, i.e. coastal sailing facilities, employ staff on a seasonal basis. Such work attracts young people especially.
Working with local parish churches, AOS reaches out to all whose connection to sailing brings them to different ports. Whether they enjoy sailing as a leisure activity or they earn their living in the sailing industry, AOS seeks to offer them pastoral care.
In 2002-03 the AOS International Office undertook a research programme on how the AOS network could offer spiritual assistance to those involved in international sailing competitions.
