A day at the races

A fine day's fundraising despite the weather

On a typically wet summer day in June, AOS staff and volunteers attended Market Rasen racecourse in Lincolnshire. Far from losing their, rather damp, shirts on the horses, they were there to collect money to enable AOS to carry out our vital work among seafarers. Fr Colum Kelly, AOS regional co-ordinator for the Humber ports, described the team's effort as a "labour of love" which raised £500 for AOS.

Also at the races were crew members of the Scandi Bergen which was undergoing repairs in the port of Immingham. The research vessel had been chartered by Shell to survey oil fields but was having problems with a generator. The crew of 82, including seafarers and researchers of various nationalities, had been stuck in port for three weeks with little to do while repairs were underway. Fr Colum and his team were delighted to be able to bring a dozen crew members along to Market Rasen for a much needed day out.

Our thanks to the Market Rasen racecourse authorities for their kind permission to hold a collection and also to our wonderful volunteers for working so hard helping us to help seafarers.
