AOS has been active in the port of Berwick-upon-Tweed since 2005. With the assistance of Fr Frank McCullagh, then parish priest of Our Lady and St Cuthbert’s, a small team of volunteer ship visitors was recruited and trained.
Jo Norton has been an AOS ship visitor in Berwick since the beginning of our activities there bringing with her a wealth of experience in volunteering and pastoral work. She has established ecumenical links locally and works closely with the Salvation Army. Jo also liaises with the Port Missioner, of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, based at nearby Eyemouth who provides support for Filipino fishermen working out of that port.
In addition, Jo has taken on the role of Parish Contact. She ensures that the work of the AOS, and more particularly an appreciation of the need to support seafarers, are prominent in parish life.
Her colleagues in AOS GB were absolutely delighted when Jo was nominated for the title of “Catholic Woman of the Year” in 2007.
